A lot of us use Steam as our social hub for PC gaming, eg IM'ing our Steam buddies, etc. Also many like to utilise handy Steam features like screenshot taking (+ uploading said shots to Steam Cloud) and in-game web browsing (Yes, I know that the Origin in-game overlay has a browser too, but it blows). It's entirely possible to have Steam overlay access whilst playing BF3.
What you have to do is add Origin as a non-Steam game. From there just access the Properties of the Origin shortcut from within the Steam client's My Games tab, rename it to Battlefield 3 and finally change the icon to that of the bf3.exe.
