View Full Version : Receiving standard edition key in BF3 Limited Edition PC packaging

SUMMARY: A number of people seem to be affected by this (source (http://www.gpforums.co.nz/showthread.php?s=&postid=8457509#post8457509)), so probably a mass packaging errors with the shipment of BF3 LE PC boxed retail copies that New Zealand received. My advice if you haven't already bought this game, GET A DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION COPY AND NOT ONE ON PHYSICAL OPTICAL MEDIA.

I received a standard edition key within the packaging of my BF3 LE (purchased from JB Hi-Fi Wellington). I got it sorted in the end after sitting in the EA Support Live Chat for at least an hour. I got given a new BF3 LE key, with all of the Origin pre-order exclusives attached:- Back to Karkand, Physical Warfare Pack, BF Play4Free equipment.

In case it might help others, I will post my chat log with the EA Support rep below. Please excuse all of my uneditable language mistakes.

As for having to download the whole game again, this copy and paste trick from this BF3 Beta thread (http://www.gpforums.co.nz/showthread.php?s=&threadid=431180&perpage=35&pagenumber=22) works.


The copy paste trick works.


If you're a Telstraclear customer, go download the BETA files there.

Then Open Origin, find BF3 BETA and hit the download button.

Once it starts downloading, pause it and close Origin.

Now go find where it was installing the files to, e.g. C:/ProgramFiles(x86)/Electronic Arts/Battlefield 3 BETA

Now, extract the BETA files you got from ON3 into that folder and replace/write-over any duplicate files.


Once complete, restart Origin and hit the download button again. Origin should start downloading maybe 1-2% of files and then instantly stop and install the BETA, thus saving much bandwidth.

EDIT:-
Having two BF3 keys associated to your account confuses the Origin client (i.e. it tries to launch my uninstalled dud standard edition rather than the spiffy LE). The way around this is to hide BF3 standard edition from Origin.

1. Quit out of the Origin client.
2. Point Windows Explorer at C:\ProgramData\Origin\
3. Open InstalledGames.xml in a text editor (eg Wordpad).
4. Find the line in the config file with gameID="70619". Change the value of hidden="0" to equal 1.
5. Save the changes made.
6. Re-open Origin.

Here's a visual example of the Origin client with both standard edition and LEs registered. You can see my dud standard edition there, to the left of the old BF3 Beta and the Limited Edition to the right.

Yea it makes sense... why my game in origin only shows BF3 and not BF3 LE... ffs...

Their support is hit and miss.. Can On3/PT contact EA NZ directly and organize a process with them to sort out this shit... EA dropped the ball hard :(

Well, I didn't take part in the beta, so I can't copy those files over. I'm not keen on downloading them again, specially at this late, and it's a bit of a wait for the chat thing. Plus I don't have any way of taking a photo to prove that I have the LE copy.

So if you have another way to resolve this, it would be appreciated.

I've emailed them thanks for the concern lol. Was however wondering if anyone knew anything else as this may be a different issue, as Benzine has confirmed it may. That having been said apparently some people are running around with the PW pack stuff, albeit I haven't seen them.

Been there done that I just got "please wait atleat 6 hours but allow upto 24", so fucking much for "day-1" access. Should have just automaticly unlocked for anyone who logins in with limited edition.

Well it took 75 minutes from joining the queue.

End result after taking a photo of receipt, packaging, cd key etc I was told by EA that they could not help me as the information I had provided was invalid. wtf!

After asking how it can be invalid he replied that the cd key I had provided was not allocated to a physical copy and said good night and ended convo

Looks like Playtech will have to deal with this

Mine just says BF3. Where is the second code? i only have a code on the white sheet.

Still is playtech's problem, even if not their fault. They should be sorting this out and should have some clout with EA to get it fixed.

Mines still on the same courier Van that it was 20 hours ago according to the website, so I would be happy to have 2/3rds of the game now anyway.

Seems that you haven't understood my OP. You have to contact EA Support Live Chat and try politely wring a Back to Karkland redemption key or BF3 Limited Edition key out of the tech support rep.


Well, I didn't take part in the beta, so I can't copy those files over. I'm not keen on downloading them again, specially at this late, and it's a bit of a wait for the chat thing. Plus I don't have any way of taking a photo to prove that I have the LE copy.

What? You do not need the beta files, the general instructions for copying over a BF3 full installation are the same. I'll try to explain with more clarity here:-
1. I had already redeemed the wrongly supplied BF3 standard edition key on Origin and had the game fully installed and patched up on my PC.
2. The EA Support rep gave me a new BF3 LE key (w/ access to the Back to Karkand expansion). After I redeemed the key the Origin client started downloading BF3 from scratch.
3. I used the general instructions supplied for the "copy-paste trick" from that BF3 beta thread to be able to install/play my newcopy of the BF3 LE, without having to download everything again. I backed up my BF3 installation directory; uninstalled the standard edition; started up a download of the LE and then paused it; quit out of the Origin client; overwrote the newly created BF3 game directory with the one I backed up; launched Origin and resumed the "download" of BF3 LE. As a result the download was 98% complete and I only had to download ~200MB before being able to play.

I think I've been effected, ordered through Mighty Ape..

In the case I got: The game (2 discs), paper about mass effect 3, MOH/Karkand flyer, white paper with CD key and the specact kit code

Fucking finally. I had to get ea customer help to remove my old cdkey for me. I had to wait 60mins first time and then she dcd before i could test new one then i had to wait for another person to remove old code and they were slow as fuck at replying so only took 2 hours and i still have to reinstall....

Mine just says Battlefield 3 in Origin .. not Limited edition, when in game would it say "Currently playing Battlefield 3 - Limited Edition" :S

I purchased BF3 LE Hardcopy through a store.

All my packaging & discs say LE, but when key is entered it is standard edition.

This is a known problem and I am not the only one affected.

Do you know what is being done to rectify this?

I ordered from Mighty Ape, got the same issue. I suspect it's probably related to any physical copy.

Worth a read. Take it with a grain of salt, as industrial espionage is rife, but I'd believe it. I've bought fucked copies of Crysis AND Warhammer Online and have felt the sting of EA. I hates 'em, I do.

Hey so I just called PT as I wanted to hear what they were going to do for me.... He said they'd already been in contact with EA etc and that it was a know issue for Aus/NZ and that they are looking to rectify the issue at the moment... How long will it take EA I don't. He obviously couldn't answer any questions on time or if we'd lose our current stats etc but this is a royal cock up on EA's part....

When I was installing BF3, I logged into Origin and the soldier was there, however it said (BF3 not available please install). So If you re-install or change CD-Keys etc, it's still the same game that will open up Battle log with your origin ID...

Talked to Chen from PT, he's with the EA NZ guy at Armageddon, they're trying to sort it out with EA UK now. Hopefully we'll see a solution soon.

In New Zealand, the Physical Warfare Pack was exclusive to EB Games and Origin pre-orders. It's not part of the regular LE.

They called me about an hour ago assuring this issue is being worked on too.

Surely the easiest way would be to send the affected LE owners a back to Karkand serial key.
Doesn't seem all that difficult to resolve tbh.

+1, I don't think Playtech are going to do nothing, they are a majorly involved with the NZ gaming coumunity and will look to sort something out with us. The CGA is going way to far considering it's not really PT's fault. If anything I'd be looking at what can I do against EA since it was their job to ensure the product was correct.

Its EA's fault, they should have mentioned the difference between physical warfare pack and limited edition, nothing wrong with packaging, LE edition just has to wait for couple of weeks to get the expansion its still free, but physical warfare gets them now with the seperate key they get.

The Back To Karkand card in the Limited Edition retail box doesn't have a key. It just says that your normal key gives you access to the expansion for free once it is released.

I'm sure that people are jumping to conclusions and confusing this with the Physical Warfare version - which was the version someone posted pics of here and elsewhere.

A closer example would be buying a car as it comes with a free umbrella. You get the car but no umbrella. Not a huge issue as you know it's not going to rain for 3 weeks so you don't need it till then. Even so, you complain at every chance you can get that you paid for the car with umbrella and you will be pissed off until you get your umbrella. The car sales person says you can still drive the car and that they will sort the umbrella out. But I have no umbrella!!!!! I paid for the umbrella edition and want it now!!!! even though it wouldn't unlock until later anyway. Waaaah etc. I'm in the same boat, but if this sort of problem is all you have to deal with in life then I wish I was that lucky.

BF3 time :D I just hope it doesn't rain as my copy didn't come with the umbrella.

It's obviously a known issue, and if it's not sorted in a suitable time frame, then sure complain then, I will be too.

Seems like packaging between standard and LE editions have been mixed up with the keys. Within oga we have 5-6 people affected that we know of so far, some of those not affected got copies at the same stores. Hit and miss it seems

Sorry Rii, there are also some time limited unlocks as well with certain LE. but they were store specific bonuses (EB games here, bestbuy US etc) which was a few weapons automatically unlocked at game start.

You are comparing Karkand to an umbrella... I'd say Karkand would be more like buying the GT model and being given the G. Karkand is a rather important reason why most people pre-ordered the game... Its not really just another gun that you can unlock later or anything its actually something of value.

But everyone should just chill out. I rang PT because I wanted to hear it from the horses mouth what was going to happen.

If it is an Origin problem ie it's supposed to show BF3 LE for your key, then none of this would be a problem. The problem is the fact that EA Support say you've got a standard BF3 key and you WONT get access to the Back To Karkand expansion when it's available in 3weeks. Even though you WANT to be 100% sure you got what you paid for.

If EA Support provided sensible information on (There's a problem with Origin and registering the products for AUS/NZ region where BF3 LE show up as BF3 only), then this would have cleared up the mistake and people would be on their merry way.

The only difference between bf3 and bf3 LE (software wise) is the back to Karkand dlc, which it is not known when it will be unlocked. Tonnes of people are affected by this, many of them jumping up and down. The powers to be know already. It'll get sorted before it makes any matter.

It's not Playtech's responsibility to print the CD-Keys on the documentation. However it is PT's responsibility to ensure their customers receive what they pay for. Ie. They will need to sort this out directly with EA as they are responsible for the packaging.

good thing I read this thread.
I bought my copy of BF3 from NZGameShop which they ship all their products from UK so hopefully over there they don't have this issue.
Although I have to wait a whole week for this to arrive :(
It's ok though I have exams until end of next week.

One thing I gotta mention though.
I bought my LE of BC2 from Mighty Ape and now that I have Origin it is showing that I have the Digital Deluxe Edition which includes BC2 and Vietnam.
So I thought I got Vietnam for free but after going in game that wasn't the case.

So keep in mind that your copy might actually be a LE of BF3 its just that Origin might not have updated the cover picture correctly.
I just thought I would mention this. This might not necessarily be the case.

hmm talked with the guy at Origin on live chat, he checked my key and acc said that its not limited edition, iv been given standard edition and have to contact the shop for warranty, now playtech tells me to send copy of my invoice and all through email because EA nz has fkd it up, fs should have bought from EB


There is a problem in NZ. Conflicting laws and I.E. consumer guarantees act and fair trading act put the blame onto the retailer even though they are not the one that created the fuck up in the first place. Problem is that US and other countries don't have either to the degree that NZ does, so aren't bound like NZ are. Unfortunately for all the retailers involved OUR law puts the ball back in there court and for them to them sort the issues out with the wholesaler involved.

Obviously this isn't one of those take it back and get your money back situations because then piracy laws also prevent this (so you dont take it home copy it, use the code then return product for a refund). Our Law states that when you purchase goods from a shop (brick and mortar) you are in fact sold what is on the box. add or promotion unless a substitute that suits both parties that entered into the purchase agreement (I.E money changed hands) can be agreed upon.

So in this case if its purchased through a brick and mortar shop you do indeed have to deal direct with the shop and not the wholesaler (EA NZ), It's going to require some patience and understanding from both parties as No retailer has the power to just create you a new code, they cant swap the product out and even if they did they couldn't guarantee it would work either.

Patience and nice words with the retailers involved guys will get you a lot further and will maintain your relationships with them.

FYI

If you have trouble getting the game to launch, go into your default browser and go to http://battlelog.battlefield.com/bf3/ and make sure you have the plugin installed, I run Opera and after I manually went to battlelog and installed the plugin everything started working

Now to solve this mouse nagative acceleration pita

Well contacted support again seeing people are having some success.

Explained the situation to "Theodore" to be told the whole problem is nothing to do with EA and its the retailers fault for not checking the codes. I asked how a company is able to check codes when the cases are sealed. He replied EA are aware of the problem and are trying to fix it.

So I replied after you guys have implied I'm trying to rip you off, you now admit there is a problem??????? Guy replies that is all I have to say at this time even when its not EA's fault and then he disconnected me!

I had had enough at that point and couldn't get it working. The disc installation said installing Battlefield 3, whereas the download stated installing Battlefield 3 Limited edition. Had enough of mucking around with it and went the way of letting it do what it wanted.

I bought the Limited Edition so that I could play the expansion pack on release, not because I wanted a few extra words in my game title. You probably don't need to bother reading this, it's just a huge rant, and I added a lot to it after writing it originally, so it probably doesn't even make any sense, but the TLDR; is that EA are pricks, and they are the definition of EVIL multinational corporation.

I really do wonder what qualifications or training the Origin support people need, as there is absolutely NO consistency at all between any of them.

When I had to deal with the idiots about having purchased MOH LE and not getting an early access BF3 beta key, I spoke to three different people who all told me completely different things, then eventually I got an answer out of them which sort of made sense, however it wasn't a good answer. I was told that since I had not played MOH LE online, that I am not legible for early access, but I checked, and there was no indication of this.. Anywhere, I checked the case, the manual, ingame, I even went to the official website which had terms and conditions, and none of them stated anything about having to play online, so after talking to the tier 1 for a while, I was elevated to tier 2 support on three occasions and every time as soon as I got to position one in the queue (30 minutes each time) I was told 'sorry there is no one available to help you' and instead of you know, just letting me wait there for a while, IT BLOODY KICKED ME out of the chat room and I had to go back to the shit as crap tier 1 support who were all clueless as hell, and no matter what, they told me that 'sorry, we can not bump you ahead in the queue, so you will just have to wait'.

So I raged, and said that there is no way that I am waiting for a fourth time (this would mean I'd have to have waited a total of two fucking hours to get help from someone who probably would be of no help), so eventually the tier 1 person said that their tier 3 support would get in contact with me within 48 hours, to which I said that is ridiculous, as I am complaining about not getting access to the early access beta, which only goes for 48 hours, but there was nothing else I could do, so I accepted that, and told the tier 1 tool that I expect an official apology from EA, and some form of remuneration for being messed around.

Well, I had no hope that EA would actually get in contact with me, and luckily I was lucky enough to be posting on another forum (Australian one called Whirlpool) and another member on there received two early access keys, and gave me one.. So then the 48 hours went by, and the early access finished, and I got a reply from EA on the third day (first day of open beta) saying something along the lines of 'Hello, we now see that you ended up getting access to the beta, so unless you have any other problems, have a nice time playing', which pissed me off even more, as it had NOTHING to do with EAs shit support, it was to do with a very nice member on the WP forums, but EA don't give a shit. They did not even type the word sorry, or any single word for an apology for being stuffed around..

Pricks, the lot of them.

As great a game as BF3 is, shit like what happened to me, and what happened to Growler in being directly accused of using photoshop to doctor a photo just to trick them into giving him a LE copy of BF3 is absolutely ridiculous, and if I was in charge of the help centre, that person would be given at the very least a very stern talking to. Absolutely shocking form EA. For a company as big as EA, you would expect them to employ people who actually know what the hell they are talking about.

It is thanks to these sorts of issues, that if there is ever an EA game released in the future which I am on the fence about buying, I will not, and I have told absolutely everybody that I can about my story, in the hope that perhaps they too have the same view on future EA releases.

I remember when I was younger, if there was ever a problem with something, my dad would always get on the phone and ring up the company, and one way or another, he would get something out of them, possibly as small as an apology, or a replacement item, or anything else which was appropriate for the situation, or if the phone conversation went in a different direction then he would always take down the person who he spoke to's name, and their work ID, and he would elevate the matter (via another phone call or a letter to the company) and take up the issue with someone higher up than the staff member, or, alternatively if the person was helpful, he would ask to speak to the manager, and tell the manager that the person was very helpful, or even write a letter to say so.

Now, with the EA support, they have absolutely no responsibility, they can (and obviously have, in Growler's case) say what ever the hell they want, and get away with it! I mean, if Growler was to write a letter to EA, complaining about Tabitha.. Is there even a place where you can send a letter to EA? Either way, I doubt that Tabitha would get into trouble. As I think it was Rii, said, she was probably thanked for being so attentive to the matter of criminal Kiwi's doctoring photos to get freebies.

Not thread worthy but as many here have had there dealing with the workings of origin and CD keys. I was given free a copy of BF3 to give my son by a person who had already installed it on there Origin account but as they had a shit PC that would not run it they gave it to me.

Blah blah CD key in use, any idea how to transfer to my sons origin account? Sent EA online Email thingy but as you c($%@* have taken up all there time I am not expecting a response any time soon. Any ideas?

There seems to be a problem with this as you have encountered, this has been brought to our attention and we are currently trying to determine where the actual problem is, it seems that it may be as simple as the wrong box image showing up through Origin, we are testing new codes to see what causes this, your code may be in fact correct but just not showing up, our collogues in Oz have not encountered this problem so it may be a local issue.

Origin are looking into this and we can get new CD keys if this turns out to be as simple as that!!

Will keep you posted, keep in mind that the LE content isn't out yet!
