So for everyone concerned, or hating for that matter...

http://blogs.battlefield.ea.com/battlefield_bad_company/archive/2011/10/03/battlefield-3-open-beta-update-2.aspx

I want to give you an overview of how the Open Beta is helping us shape a fantastic final game, what we are implementing based on your feedback, and how the Open Beta will help us deliver a robust gaming environment from day one.

The Open Beta is a true Beta
The Battlefield 3 Open Beta is based on software that is more than one month old. We need to test the new back end dedicated server structure we’ve built. Not only have we built a new game engine, but an entirely new back end system so that everyone can enjoy the benefits of dedicated servers on all platforms.

Just like normal procedure when releasing a game, the Open Beta has had long lead times due to testing, certification, and setting up. This means that the code you are now playing is actually quite early and not representative of the final game.

We had to do this in order to have as many people testing as possible, in order to ensure a top quality experience when the game is released. However, we’re confident in the Battlefield formula and confident that our fans will support us in order to make Battlefield 3 better.

Dedicated servers require dedicated testing
The biggest reason for running the Open Beta is to stress test our servers and back end. Already, we are seeing 6 times the number of simultaneous players in the Battlefield 3 Open Beta compared to the Beta for Battlefield: Bad Company 2! The fact that Battlefield 3 is clearly our biggest game launch ever by a magnitude of 6 makes it doubly important to test everything.

Testing one month old code... What is the point?

I think they just messed up the release and are using that excuse as cover because the beta wasn't ready in time.

Regardless still enjoy having a go at it and seeing what it looks like before the final release.

I would wait till the game is released and patched before QQing.

Beta has bugs, but is a good game.

Can't say the same about a lot of other betas in the last 6 years...

All betas and builds in general are old by the time the public gets to see them.
Major issues that they find that they haven't spotted and worked on already will be being worked on now for a day 1 patch.
As far as most game schedules goes the beta was completed on time.

This game eats the pants off anything released since bf2... TBH not a massive feat but still.

There testing the back end C geesh didn't you get the gist of this when they repeated themselves 3 times.

I can recall the wow awesome factor of BC2 when it first came out, clearly. There's none of that with BF3, although I fully expect there to be some once we see some real maps.

I have actually started playing the beta on low settings, so that when the full game is released, it's not just more of the same, I might actually be surprised by the good graphics.

Nah he just aborts just before he hits prime. So when its finally released he might actually be surprised by the result.

I imagine just all the stuff at their end?

I don't think the BETA has had any client side fixes?
