View Full Version : Beta Server Status

Due to the big influx of players recently, we have seen that the amount of current servers that we are hosting on the hardware is affecting performance in game. Therefore we are reducing the amount of servers we are running to hopefully spread round the load more evenly and reduce the rubber banding occurring in the servers.

Sooooooo as the night gets long for us here in NZ, the reasons as to why ON3 Network is ridiculously busy for the servers becomes apparent.
1. The three main server providers for Australia are GameArena/Mammoth, Hypernia, and Games.on.net with GameServers.com also tuning in with a few alongside others.
2. Yesterday we were provided with a server fix for which was not 100% stable. ON3 Network decided to not update to this patch due to the lack of stability - what turned out to be a good idea based on feedback from others.
3. Those who did update to the server fix were greeted with servers randomly crashing and not restarting after varying shortish periods of times (sometimes a few hours, sometimes a few minutes).
So with the above noted, DICE have not advised regarding whether the server fix is compulsory or not, albeit they originally provided the fix and said it must be done by X time. As a result some providers updated to the new server release and maintained it, while others either updated and rolled back, or like us, did not update at all. Those who did update and haven't rolled back are now experiencing stability issues, and of course on that list is most of the Australian providers - in fact, all three of the first ones I listed above.
These providers have not rolled back at this stage due to no formal advice being given by DICE which is fair on one hand given it's a beta, but on the other in my personal view is a bit weird given the issues are obvious. So 1+1 equaling 2 like it does, Australia has a huge discrepancy in the number of servers available to it's territory for the first night of the beta in the first territory to have a peak time. As a result, ON3 Network has seen a load of Australian players come across the ditch to play on our servers, and thus why we have been continuously full since 6:30pm NZDST. I expect this to continue for another 2 hours through to 3:30am NZDST which is the equivalent of 12:30am AEST (note their DST kicks in tomorrow night).
So as we expected, the beta providing it's interesting issues, but this one we certainly didn't think would happen. Hopefully this issue is sorted tomorrow/tonight by DICE and we will see a more manageable night tomorrow night - albeit if we don't, it means good things for the NZ BF community. We're also kind of grateful, as although annoying, Craigor is confident the performance of the servers is now optimised - we just need to get rid of some of the rubberbanding we're hearing about - we believe this is due to the international link being saturated by Aussies, but won't know until they go back to their side of the ditch and play :P
Thanks for your perseverance everyone, and hopefully it wasn't too bad a night's play. We would still appreciate any feedback whether via PM to any of the Head Admins, or just in general in a new thread to let us know your experiences for the night.

Thanks Growler - we'd love to pword some servers, as I myself didn't even get to play tonight either (cbf'd looking at the servers being so full, and also because I wanted to keep Craigor company), but unfortunately, we're not allowed to. Only the Caspian servers are allowed to be locked up, and they are restricted to the hosts who hosted the Alpha only.

Quick update: overnight (around 4am NZDST) the Master Server was updated. This update is supposed to help with the stability of the latest server build. As a result we will monitor to see what feedback the other providers have before upgrading. There is also a further upgrade scheduled for later today, so we may just skip to that in due course. Either way, please be aware that we may drop the servers to upgrade without any more notice than this post.
Growler
1st October 2011, 10:53 AM
How long (estimate) do you take to do a rolling upgrade on all servers?
More asking out of curiosity etc. How many instances per rig? how many rigs, how much BW you been through so far. It would have to be the most traffic the servers have seen for a while?

Solarghost
1st October 2011, 11:06 AM
Yerrr. Limit pings to about 130ms (To cater for NZ crappy connections)
16 CPUs, for all servers, so not enough processing power basically is one answer, other things that add lagg:
Aussies, Match making service, BF3 not testing their network code :P I guess beta means everyone else tests it for em ha. A reduction in servers to about 10 servers would help alot as well.

If we only had 16 CPU's you'd be playing on a shit ton less servers. On topic for this thread anyway, this is about the status.....
So, latest from the list is the potential update has not been completed, and thus we haven't updated yet. We will need to move to the latest build soon, so this we will try to do before peak time tonight. With the stability of the other providers now, we should see more freedom on the servers, and less alien infidels sucking our bandwidthsnesses.
Get to it marines!

Craig, it has long been a slight issue that for some reason TCL cable actually has a slightly worse connection to ON3 servers than other customers on occasion.
It's never been so bad it has been worth in the inevitable hassles of trying to solve it, but it is an issue that definitely exists at times.
When I have had the issue and no non TCL customer on the server has had a problem, it has always acted like some packet loss was happening somewhere. As I said however, it is intermittent and so very difficult to pin point.
If you could suggest a resident app that logs ping/packet loss and other connection data over a sustained period, that I could run when the problem shows up, then dump the log files on you, I'd be happy to do so.

One thing, servers are hosted in Auckland so for Cable customers in Christchurch and Wellington they have have longer transit.
Second, congestion could be an issue during peak hours on some nodes.
Can you guys elaborate on what you think the issue is? packet loss?
Dr Woomanchu
2nd October 2011, 07:37 PM
I think you're probably right. It feels like packet loss, and is probably transient congestion at peak hours. It is certainly not persistent, and as far as I recall, after school and mid evening is worst time for it.
As I said, it's a minor irritation, for my connection anyway. It's certainly not consistently bad.

Happening to everyone depending on how frequently you're talking about, losing connection to Battlelog would be the main reason, when it has happened I just logged in and out and reconnected without further issue. Unless there was an actual outage and I had to wait to feed my addiction.
