Gives a pretty shitty outlook for the future though.
The way things are Steam has a monopoly on the digital games distribution market which isn't ideal but at-least you can get nearly every game you want from one service.
I can see a future where every big games publisher has it's own distribution software and we have to install 10 different services to be able to play all the digital games we want to.
It could mean cheaper games but it will also give publishers much more power and money and some of the bigger ones are already abit too big for my liking which isn't good news for developers who seem to get pushed around alot these days.

Valve games are not open to be downloaded on any other digital distribution sites(afaik). If Valve can put their flagship titles exclusively on their own service, how can you get pissed at the competition doing the same with their titles? Valve is open to other publishers under a strict set of rules (which a game with the Origin installer breaks)

Some companies (ie D2D) are willing to accept terms (ie selling MW2 which then installs Steam) to offer games to customers, in this case Steam is not willing to do the same because of the real chance EA would have to rapidly gain market share.

Steam used to be totally shit. It has had years of work to become a handy platform to collect games on.
I bought the expansions to BF2 on EA download service, which subsequently I had endless trouble using. Just as well they then issued the maps with the 1.51 update to everyone. I did get my packs when they gave them away to everyone.

I would imagine EA dont want to pay steam to advertise their games on steam store and service. And maybe steam demands too much from the developers in contractual obligations like, once you have sold 1 million copies through our store we require you to accept we will offer special pricing during sale periods.

FFS I bought BFBC2 for $100, then a 4 pack on steam, then a few mates a couple copies on steam, then a spare full copy for only $10USD (its still in my gifts area) I think steam could be being a bully to EA and they dont like meeting a company as big (if not bigger) than them.

All I say is I hope Origin brings out a lovely working chat/sales software to promote further games and expansions with BF3.

It will suck if every time you wanna play BF3 you have to be showered in advertisements for SIMS4 or Medal of Honor - failfight 5, orBuy the latest football manager or basketball game by ea sports before you get to load up and kill people.

Or if everytime you load up origin it involves a new hit on their overloaded stats database and we see nightly outages and other fail crap.

brings an entire universe of EA games into a single, convenient application.


TBH it makes business sense to have there own store, they make the profit instead of steam clipping the ticket. and they old system they had was crap and needed an upgrade.
Still got northern strike in origin, pretty sure that 2142 latest patch had it in anyway.

Origin could be a good platform for patching. will have to see how it goes compared to steam and if a retail can be activated and treated like a origin download. would be better this way for dice to roll out patches thou would remove the point of buying the DVD. Bound to be a day 1 patch anyway and origin will go down under the load, big lack of local content servers etc.

The difference is that BF3 is a game I want, whereas, Orgin is yet another permanently resident app that I don't fuckin want and will be forced to use if I want to play BF3. I have no interest in giving it a chance, I expect it to work efficiently and as silently as possible so that with any luck I forget I had to install it. Kinda like Microsoft Live that I have to use to play Dirt 3. My signin is "IHateForcedJoin", but at least Live is basically invisible to me when I play and closes when I finish with Dirt 3

Worse yet, BF2 names were unique to gamespy accounts, with no way to link existing ones in the background.
I had already had a gamespy account Pyromanik for years. BF2 player lookup shows there's no such player. But I had to register as Pyr0manik.

Because they want to control re-selling of discs. Second hand buyers may have to 'buy' an online account.

Nah, receiving invites seems to work well if they are off line. Origin beta does seem to get confused about being online for me. My gaming PC is still set to load on boot and seems to think I am offline when it loads. laptop works okay. they have a crap load of work to do on origin to come close to steam IMO
