With BF3 saying that its 64 player..
what server specs are ON3 using or are they updaing to take the load of 64 player.
Will they share as many Servers on same hardware ?
Will network pipes to server and wans be increased to cope with the high fraffic to server volume.
JUst curious.

Dont even joke about that...lol
I was just interested from ON3 point of view as there is so much hype and will be big (no doubt)...which means more people (which is good)...just interested in what ON3 thought and might do to make the gamming experience the best it can be.

I remember teh fiasco that were the bf2 servers after that couple took over the hosting from Iconz. It killed the NZ bf2 playerbase completely, everyone moved to aussie servers.
Don't make me come up there and shit in your toaster .osiris , Muahahaha!

We are looking at ways to ensure we have plenty of resource to power the BF3 servers
We have already cleaned up the current host servers to free up some processing power, and we are looking into other options

It apparently already has more pre-orders than black ops had on release .

^^ Bro had you thought that these guys have more pressing issues than writing blogs and memos like a day in the life of Nemo or something. I agree with the above, time wasted for the techno folk of ON3, would rather them doing something useful like working out how to get me ping less inter webs in Whangarei

Another question, how is ON3 funded?
Craigorsarus
26th July 2011, 06:25 PM
Well I have two jobs, and I make my partner starve so that I can give as much money as possible to Arseynimz
He then spends it on things like strippers, and puts a little bit towards server costs and fast food

Apart from what Craigor says - which I must say is a rather delicious thought - we have generous sponsor support alongside fantastic community support, and we get support through advertising also.
If you want to know any more, please feel free to contact me directly with your queries.

Whats your ping like? im on TCL and i get about 30 or less to TF2 servers.
Well here is a little technical update, just because i just got to work, and CBF'd starting anything yet.
We have :
Remove servers no longer used
Updated sourcemod/metamod/amxmod on all of our games to ensure the most bug free environment
Removed any apps no longer needed eg: steam client was needed for one game
Removed 10GB worth of dump files, and added them to the weekly cleanup script
Made about 30 - 40GB of space on each host
Defragged the gaming partitions
Run CCleaner to fix up any registry crap & remove temp files
As 203.97.27.203 used to be the webserver we have removed all the services related to that (MySQL, Apache etc.)
Currently in the process of trying to get ports open to some of our other servers so we can move things like teamspeak and mumble over to them instead of having them running on the same hosts as the games, making the gaming servers run nothing but games.
Any one of these is minimal alone, but together all this maintenance work will speed things up.
Im planning on running a report for Fri - Fri the week before the changes, and Fri - Fri the week after to see average CPU / Memory usage.
There is still more to do, and you might hear about some of it, the rest you might not... But we are doing stuff to make sure BF3 is a hit.

Normally around 80ms in game to ON3 or 25-30 in menu... but lately somewhere between 110 and 130 in game and 40-50 in menu... Perhaps it has something to do with the fiber to your door stuff that's starting to take place in Whangarei, but wouldn't have thought they would be touching the hardware side of things till they had it all run?
I think things turned to custard when they rolled out that new IP? system a month back or what ever it was.
You should have the server locally in whangarei to assist you in your work, make my ping mean :D

Will it be delivered by 7 nude virgins all wanting to play nasty sex games with me while BF3 installs and downloads the 47gb patch on release day?

Remember BC2's 'ping' isnt your normal ping.
If you ping 203.97.27.201 (Just one of the hosts) you should see your ping to our server, BC2 does some weird round trip ping, including server time to bounce off EA
Hence why my TF2 ping may seem amazing compared to your BC2 ping.

and if you dnt know how ... windows key + R then cmd hit enter and type "ping 203.97.27.201" (without the speech marks)

This is why im sure there is more lag in the actual application / EA side of things than with us, but we are always looking into it to ensure we are doing things the best we can.

We are making space well in advance, and will get up a beta server as soon as were can so we can test network ports and hardware requirements.

Good to hear! I"m confident that you guys wont let us down.
PS. "Removed any apps no longer needed eg: steam client was needed for one game"
NS2 - beta - you can run a server without the steam client crap that had to be there before. They've cleaned it up quite a bit in the latest version, which reminds me I need to update that thread :P

Hence why i removed steam, and NS2, no one was using it, if it gets more of a following we will look at putting the service version back in.

When the server was up it was full the entire time. lol I couldn't get on, and jumped on the next avail aussie server instead :P
The server netcode/lag has been optimized however I'm unsure of the memory usage with the latest build. I do know the early versions were not ideal. Hey feel free to post on the NS2 thread or PM me :)
