Anyone else have StarCraft II try to melt their hardware? Blizzard admits that it's a known issue and has a fix for you.

Apparently, the game's menu screens aren't framerate-limited. This means that when there's nothing else going on, your graphics hardware renders the bejeezus out of those screens, causing nasty overheating problems. The fix is easy, requiring players to add the following lines to your "Documents\StarCraft II Beta\variables.txt" "Documents\StarCraft II\variables.txt" file (nice catch, commenter LegolElf):

frameratecapglue=30
frameratecap=60

Good to know. Personally I would have appreciated a heads-up before my video card fried, but maybe this can save someone else from the hassle I've been dealing with since yesterday afternoon.

On a related note, Blizzard explains StarCraft II's system requirements in detail here. If you're curious, you'll get a much better answer there than you would from me directly. So stop asking and read the official post already!

Just a bit of a warning if you didn't know.

im pretty sure that was the problem when they first released the 'beta' - since then, the beta has gone through about 20-odd patches and I am sure it was fixed before it reached retail.

Incorrect. Well: Correct with the 'it was fixed in beta'

The three main memory leaks remain in retail. I only know this because my beta-playing classmate alerted me to it.

Tabbing/Windows keying out leaks memory
Menu leaks memory
Single player - AI Matches leak memory

Cacheman/processxp shows ever increasing memory use even when idle.

From what I can gather, retail is pre-five beta build or something. Not that I particularly mind, since Im only playing multiplayer and all.

I would think if your graphics card melts, it's the fault of your graphics card, not some software.

From what I read, the problem was there was no frame rate limit when the game entered the interactive menu bit, so in certain videos cards if you stayed in it too long your video card would just go wild and melt. And it is a problem, because Blizzard will be making a patch for it.

So the graphics card gets hot, so hot that it can't keep it's self cool and it melts?

It's the graphics card responsibility to keep itself cool, through managing it's fan speed and the fact that it can only run at a certain maximum speed (unless it's been overclocked).

Indeed, Starcraft having no frame rate maximum would have maxed out the graphics card, but a maxed out graphics card shouldn't overheat and melt, unless it's faulty or overclocked too much.

That's like buying a house and only ever using one room.
