View Full Version : Garrys Mod Crash Common

Just asking here, why does the CnD Garrys Mod server crash every few hours?
I've been on the server with Grump etc... and the only thing i could see is only a few PHX props when it randomly crashes.
Its common and usually around the same time... maybe 2-3 times a day it happens?
Unless its some one spamming props in a corner :P

Not sure, In my experience it only occasionally crashes.

The main problem is 'join crashes' which are cause by people joining and is a side effect of 'too many' addons. This is a problem that Garry needs to fix.

Uh yes. That would be true and also a few 'Collide' crashes from props colliding.

If you have more then 1024 lua fils in your addons on server side and the client has to download all of them then it crashes.

Wire has 650+ lua files and gcomabt about 350+ which are both on the server so your easily hitting the limit.

Only thing to fix it is remove some addons or wait for garry to fix it.

Removing wiremod or PHX would be the worst thing to do... lol
without it the server would lose guests...
Guess we will have to put up with it...

The server is up in less than 3 min, + its not every few hours, its once a day if anything

I think its more likly to crash when:

1)Its been on for a long time without a reboot. (The server does get a bit dodgy when its been on for ages, tools/constraints stop working properly and some props spawn at 1 weight)
2)Noobs spam props/large advance dupe pastes. (Although it has survived the explosive barrel test ;))
3)There are a lots of players/10 or more. (You don't see 16 players very oftern and if you do 10 props/constraints each is the limit i think)

At around 5:30am every single day, I perform the following maintainence on the gmod server:

Take server down
Check for any updates
Check for any wiremod/phx/other SVN updates
Clear out all the temporary un-needed files from the game folder
Put the server back up

So it being on for a long time without being restarted shouldn't really be an issue. It only seems to crash once or twice a day

I think the crashes are mainly related to the amount of add-ons that we have and hopefully Garry will fix that in a future update - This is accpeted by most of our players as they would rather have the addons

Ok, with one of the recent updates join crashes have been seriously reduced; They still happen but it takes a lot more for it to happen.

So we are 1/2 to a fix

As far as I know, there can't be more then 1024 characters in the joining something or other. What Garry did was made a function that auto clears your client side cache that you download off a server or something like that. Short term fix, bit like clearing the servers cache seems to help.

It has taken him this long to even make an effort to show he has acknowledged it so don't expect a fix anytime soon.

I'm glad to announce that (as far as I know and can tell) Garry fixed join crash completely!

so finally we might be able to hit our max player limit, especially once we change to a more standard map.
