Founf this on Slashdot.org - Samsung have produced a Robot Sentry gun. They cost $200k us apparently, so they're not cheap. Still... the beginning of automatic optical defence turrets is on it's way.
The NZ Navy are looking at getting a optical automatic defence turret for their Frigates, to protect against suicide jet boat bombers.

scary. U can imagine a van driving up in a crowded area and the driver jumps out open's the side door then strolls off. 30sec's later u have hundreds dead.

Hm.. we could use a few hundred of those in the SL Navy ships..
There are heaps of those f*cker in SL seas.. They keep ramming Navy ships..
BTW.. I did do somthing like this for my final year project.. Me and my partner used a PTZ network camera to track ppl in a room.. hm.. may be i should put a gun on the camera and a warning about accuracy on it and sell it for 10G +D

i expect this is just the start of automated defence systems using optical tracking. Imagine having ten stabalised weapon systems like that mounted on a unmanned APC driving into a hostile area carving up a storm... or even just two mounted on a APC as close quarter defence against personel? awesome

Metal Storm are working on a system along those lines but deploying 40mm grenade projectiles pwnage on a massive scale... almost scary. there system is to humvee mounted and all the driver has to do is turn it on and keep his foot on the gas and it will automatically engage and take down targets in the direction of the incoming fire. good thing it has non lethal ammo options ability to recognize muzzle flash and group sizings to limit body count.. e.g. gunman hiding in a group of kids it will chose non lethal round (CS Gas) to disable.

iRobot have some pretty neat robots - including swarm robots. The idea is that they can divide up and explore the terrain faster, and if one finds something of interest it calls the robots from the back of the swarm to come and help out. If it calls it's nearest neighbour then the swarm tends to divide up. I also got shown a neat robot that just looks like a pair of tracks but does a fantastic job of climbing stairs. None of the robots I've seen have been armed though...

Mirco chipping everyone would help with that..
I wonder if a person dressed as a tree could sneak past one of them... :knife:

There's already a japanese version of this out. Looks like a darlek, worth about 20k and can be armed with off the shelf weapons. But it's blue and white, so loses coolness points.

They've had IFF for quite some time, but it doesn't seem to have helped - personally i prefer the British Mk1 eyeball to all the Yank's gimicry.

On tanks and other vehicles yes but no on individual troops.
